Dia De Las Enchiladas Muertas

Last weekend brought snow flurries and the sudden, unpleasant news that Greensboro's Baja Fresh restaurant had closed in the few months since Miss Vinegar's last day trip there (the closest now appears to be in the Short Pump suburb of Richmond). As a tribute, and to remind you to eat good food next time you're in the li'l ol' capital of the Confederacy, our first review.

Baja Fresh
formerly on Rte. 220 in Greensboro, NC

The Food--Fantastic. The entire point of Baja Fresh is that it is a fast-food restaurant that wants to be slow food. You can see heaps of tomatos behind the counter, everything's made fresh, and there are no microwaves. Miss Vinegar's favorite is the cheese enchiladas verdes with black beans and pico--the only pico de gallo she eats anywhere--on the side. They also offer shrimp and steak tacos, as well as the usual Mexican restaurant fare.

Special Touches--The beverage station features lime as well as lemon slices: the salsa bar is a dream come true, particularly the chipotle-infused Salsa Roja.

Ambience--Fairly typical high-class fast food, with hipsterish iron chairs and some high-top tables.

Problems--Only that they keep closing them down: Miss Vinegar will be stopping by on her next trip east, however.

Overall: * * * * (four stars out of five)
