Rarebit Season!

Miss Vinegar continues an upwardly-mobile dining streak this week with a visit to what seems to be fast becoming a local institution. (Rest assured, however, that Miss Vinegar is not getting ideas above her station in life, and when possible is still visiting KFC and similar eateries. Also, don't think she didn't hear you making that 'institution' joke.)

Crystal Spring Avenue, Roanoke, VA

The Food--Fork in the Alley bills itself as a "brick-oven pub," with lots of upscale pizza offerings and focaccia sandwiches. Particularly satisfying, however, was the chance to finally partake of Welsh rarebit. The southwesterhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifn-themed chicken sandwich with seasoned fries was also quite good. All that left no room for dessert, but as dessert is a brick-oven S'more, Miss Vinegar fails to see how it could go wrong.

The Service--Quite good, unless the sight of personnel in "May the Fork Be With You" T-shirts is simply too much to bear.

The Ambience--An outdoor patio forms the bulk of the dining space, with a small brick-and-dark-wood bar and dining area within. Pretty and distinguished, though one wonders where the live music acts find room to perform.

Special Touches--The aforementioned T-shirts, wooden menus with burlap covers.

Overall: ***1/2 (three point five stars out of five)
