Looks Like the Local Color Is...Purple?

Miss Vinegar has the good fortune to live within easy distance of a number of good, and good-looking but as yet untried, restaurants, hardly any of which she ever visits. A sad fact she attempted to remedy last weekend by going out with PoBoy...

Norberto's
Memorial Avenue, Roanoke

The Food-- Norberto's offers all the basics--chicken parmigiana, veal dishes, baked pasta and all the rest--that you could require in an Italian restaurant. And in fact, Miss Vinegar is a great lover of Italian food, but found the offerings at Norberto's to be hit-or-miss.
The stuffed mushrooms appetizer was perfect, PoBoy's canneloni al forno got raves, and the tiramisu, while 1) wedge-shaped, 2) partially frozen, and 3) weirdly hard on top, was nonetheless enjoyable. However...Miss Vinegar ordered the Filet Mignon with peppercorns in wine sauce, and while the steak was excellent, it suffered from both a lack of adequate peppercorns and a very, very sweet, nearly purple wine sauce, which was also used on the side of angelhair pasta.

The Service-- Excellent, with attentive servers and quick refills on drinks.

The Ambience-- Your typical small Italian restaurant decor, despite the slightly upscale menu. Miss Vinegar recognized a "Venezia" poster she used to have on her dorm wall at college.

Overall: **3/4 (two point seven five stars; an extra quarter of a star for being an Italian restaurant)
